about

Each member of Five Smooth Stones has played bluegrass music at Davis family gatherings over the years, and This Road deliberately brings in some of that influence and instrumentation. The first sound on the track is John Davis' mandolin.

lyrics

I watch the sky
As feet trod on
A dream to fly
But here I stand

Underneath an autumn sky
Wishing stars could match my steps
The dirt it stirs behind
Covering the lives I've wrecked
And none of us are born innocent
But still I feel naïve
In the grips of something murderous
Do we just concede?

The stars glow bright
My eyes go closed
In cold of night
I wait for day

Gaze falls back to the ground
I am always on this road
The moon it holds it's place
To show how we lie below
And in our hearts we reconcile
What horrors we have seen
Just trying to close the gap
In what we say and mean

The cold draws close
The ache, it grows
My breath falls hard
The dirt it shows

Paint a letter scarlet red
Make a symbol, mark me dead
Or simply dying?
Coldest night consumes my day
Broken I have lost my way
Feel left to wander
This disease consumes my skin
With bitter hatred seeping in
I lost the meaning
So hold your candle up to me
Expose my sins for all to see
It's black and white

We are the jaded
We are the faded
We are the heartless
We are the hatred
We are the lonely
We are unholy
We are the foolish
But we aren't ours only

Fire, I want to be consumed
I want to walk the way You do
And leave all of these wounds
Bury all these things
In Your blood wash me white
I want to be consumed

Hallelujah we can see
Hallelujah we are broken underneath
Hallelujah these steps we've found
Without all these mistakes would we ever come around?
Hallelujah we can see
It's hallelujah when we reach the end
We reach the end
We reach the end
Of the road
